Many of you know that our daughter has special needs. Through her circumstances, God has taught my wife and me many things. One thing my wife has always said is that God blessed us and entrusted us with the responsibility of being her parents. It is a privilege.
At the same time, one of the heartbreaking things we have seen is how easily parents can be absent from important conversations about their children’s education. When students with special needs enter the school system, the district typically holds one or two meetings each year to discuss their academic, behavioral, and emotional needs. These meetings help determine what plans and supports may help each child reach important goals.
We have learned that some parents are not present for these meetings. As a result, decisions about their children may be made without them there to speak up and share what they know. The district gives parents advance notice and the opportunity to attend, so this is not about placing blame. Still, it is heartbreaking to think that a child may not have someone there to advocate for them.
Parents are among their children’s greatest advocates, especially when it comes to their education. I often wonder whether some children miss out on support simply because no one is there to speak on their behalf. We also understand that school districts must work within budget constraints, and that can make these conversations even more important for parents to be part of.
My wife and I have not agreed with every recommendation, and there have been times when we have pushed back. There have also been times when we have accepted the counsel we were given. But we have stayed informed and involved, because advocating for our daughter is part of the responsibility God has entrusted to us.
What is my point? In 1 John 2:1, we read that Jesus Christ is our Advocate. He stands for us before the Father. The word translated “advocate” describes someone who comes alongside and speaks on another’s behalf. The same word is used for the Holy Spirit, our Helper and Comforter.
As God’s child, you are not alone. I know life can make you feel that way, especially when voices seem to speak against you, or when one storm after another comes your way. But Jesus is nearer to you than you may realize. He knows your circumstances completely, and He stands and speaks for you.
The voices, circumstances, and situations around you may have caught you by surprise. They may even leave you feeling as though you have lost control. But Jesus is not surprised, and no circumstance is beyond His power. He is sovereign, and nothing can overturn His purposes. In the end, what matters most is what He says about you.
So, church, trust the One who speaks for you and holds you securely in His care. He knows what you need, and His purposes for you are good.
Blessings be upon you,
Pastor Lu
