Blessings be upon you, Church,
Have you ever noticed how fickle people can be? To be fickle means (Miriam-Webster Dictionary) lacking steadfastness, constancy, or stability. Someone who is easily swayed, often given to sudden changes. The Bible gives us clear examples of this.
Israel, after being delivered from Egypt by God’s mighty hand, lifted their voices in praise on the shores of the Red Sea (Exodus 15:1–21). Yet, just three days later, they grumbled against Moses because they had no water (Exodus 15:22–24). The same people who rejoiced in God’s power quickly doubted His provision.
We see the same pattern in our day. Think about the many resolutions people make at the start of a new year. For instance, you vowed to give up fast food and eat healthy. On January 1st, your determination was firm: “This year will be different.” Yet, only a few days later, you gave in to temptation at the sight of your favorite burger place. That once unshakable resolve faded as quickly as it came, showing how fragile human willpower truly is.
One moment, we’re determined to pursue God’s will, but when temptation, hardship, or pressure arises, we falter. We change course and then justify ourselves to ease the guilt.
But brothers and sisters, this is either forgetting the meaning of God’s grace or worse, willfully abusing it. Remember, God has been so good to us! He has freed us from the power and penalty of sin. He has poured His peace into our hearts. Because of this, we are called to walk worthy of the gift of salvation we have received.
If you find yourself struggling with fickleness, I encourage you to read four chapters (Romans 5–8). Let these truths take root in your heart. Pay special attention to passages like Romans 5:20–21; 6:1–2, 19; 7:14–25; and 8:1, 9–10, 28, 33–39. There, you will see both the reality of our human weakness and the overwhelming victory we have through Christ Jesus.
Church, know that I love you deeply. My prayer for you is your sanctification and your prosperity in Christ. May we grow into steadfast men and women of God, unshaken by trials, grounded in grace, and strong in faith.
Graciously yours,
Pastor Lu
